Cupping & Massage

Cupping is one of the many techniques we teach in our massage program, and it’s consistently a student favorite!

Cupping offers a different approach than traditional massage. Instead of applying pressure downward into the tissue, cupping lifts the tissue upward through suction, creating space and inviting fresh circulation. Many clients who’ve experienced stubborn tension or pain find relief through this distinctive approach when other methods haven’t fully resolved their issues.

The technique fits beautifully alongside Swedish, deep tissue, and myofascial techniques, giving massage therapists another valuable option for addressing client needs.

At its core, cupping works by decompressing muscles and connective tissue, boosting blood flow to areas that desperately need circulation, and providing relief where persistent tension has taken hold.

Why Cupping Works So Well

The magic happens in the vacuum. When cups are applied to the skin, they:

  • Draw stagnant blood and toxins to the surface
  • Break up fascial adhesions that cause pain
  • Encourage fresh oxygen and nutrients to flood the area
  • Create space in compressed tissue
  • Activate the body’s natural healing response

Beyond Just Back Pain

While most commonly associated with treating back tension, silicone cupping has versatile applications:

Sports Recovery: Reduces recovery time between training sessions
Respiratory Support: Helps break up congestion in the lungs
Digestive Health: Stimulates abdominal organs when applied to the core
Headache Relief: Addresses tension that contributes to chronic headaches
Scar Tissue: Improves the appearance and mobility of old injuries

The temporary marks left behind tell a story. Darker marks often indicate areas where tension and stagnation have been present longer, fading as circulation improves and the body finds its way back to balance.
